I am Canadian. Canada is a lovely country. There is minimal suffering, the scenery is aesthetically pleasing to me (in some parts—cough—not Winnipeg), the people are generally some of the most pleasant I’ve ever met, even after I’ve visited a few continents and many countries, the government is relatively stable and conducive to comfort, and everyone can feel very safe almost everywhere. Can I spend time and resources on myself? If I buy a fancy car and wear an expensive suit, am I being selfish? I could easily trade in my car for a cheaper model that worked just as well and give thousands of dollars that I saved to charity and literally save more than one life. Am I a bad person for willfully not doing that? If I get a $100 haircut and buy an Hermès tie, this surely serves as an example of my selfishness, right?
